Pigs: Only in a supporting role

Pig farming is of great importance to Austrian agriculture: Approximately 2.9 million animals live on around 25,600 farms. Even with an overall decline in consumer consumption, pork still represents the main part of the domestic meat supply.

Around Lake Wolfgang, however, the situation is somewhat different. As already mentioned, species-appropriate animal husbandry should, not least, rely on high-quality, natural feed. Pigs feed primarily on grain grown on suitable farmland. Due to the climatic conditions, corn, for example, thrives particularly well in the lower elevations of Upper and Lower Austria, as well as Styria. Higher elevations and soil composition, on the other hand, make growing feed for pig farming difficult. But our ruminants certainly appreciate the lush meadows that the region offers!
